From atomic to nuclear clocks–application of quantum science to fundamental physics

Quantum science and laser technology have fueled revolutionary developments in atomic physics and precision metrology. Quantum state engineering and system scaling have drastically enhanced the performance of atomic clocks and are opening new opportunities for fundamental discovery and novel applications. Minute-long optical atomic coherence has been realized for tens of thousands of atoms. Entanglement can also be embedded in clock operation. The recent development of nuclear clocks provides another powerful platform for performance scaling. The permeation of quantum metrology to all corners of physics sparks new ideas for testing fundamental laws of nature and searching for new physics.
